Possible Causes

Dirty water reservoir, Biofilm or mold in hoses or pump, Use of non-potable water, New plastic components off-gassing

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Unplug the unit before cleaning. Do not use harsh chemicals that are not food-safe.

Steps:

  • 1. Discard old ice: Throw away all existing ice and drain the reservoir.
  • 2. Deep clean: Prepare a solution of warm water and food-safe ice maker cleaner or white vinegar (1:1). Wipe the reservoir, ice basket, lid, and all accessible surfaces. Soak the ice basket if removable.
  • 3. Clean internal water path: Run a cleaning cycle if your model supports it, using the cleaning solution. Then run 2–3 full cycles with fresh water only, discarding the ice each time.
  • 4. Check water source: Use filtered, odor-free tap water. Avoid well water with strong mineral or sulfur odors.
  • 5. New unit smell: For new units, multiple cleaning cycles and airing out the interior for 24–48 hours usually remove plastic odors.
