Possible Causes
Stuck ice tray due to ice jam, Faulty tray position microswitch, Stripped tray drive gear, Failed tray motor
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Unplug the ice maker before attempting to free any moving parts.
Steps:
- Open the lid and inspect the ice tray: Look for misaligned cubes or large chunks of ice wedged between the tray and frame. Carefully remove any obstructions by hand—do not use sharp metal tools on the evaporator or tray.
- Defrost the tray area: If there is heavy ice buildup, leave the lid open and the unit unplugged for 30–45 minutes to allow ice to melt. Place towels to catch water.
- Check tray movement: Gently move the tray by hand (if it moves freely) to feel for binding. It should move smoothly without grinding.
- Restart: Plug the unit back in and start a new cycle. Listen for the tray motor during the harvest phase. If the error reappears and the tray does not move, the motor or position switch may be faulty.
Persistent E4 after clearing jams usually indicates a failed tray motor or position sensor that requires replacement.
