Possible Causes
Ice thickness probe coated with scale, Probe out of position or bent, Wiring harness damage, Faulty ice thickness sensor
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Unplug the ice maker and allow any moving parts to stop before reaching into the freezing compartment.
- Locate the ice thickness probe: On Gram cube ice makers, a metal or plastic probe usually hangs near the evaporator grid or plate and senses when ice reaches a set thickness.
- Clean the probe: Mineral scale can insulate the probe. Use a soft cloth and a food‑safe descaling solution (or a mix of warm water and vinegar) to remove buildup. Rinse thoroughly with clean water.
- Check alignment: Ensure the probe is positioned according to the service manual, typically a specific distance from the evaporator surface. Gently bend back into place if it has been knocked.
- Inspect wiring: Follow the probe wires to the harness and control board. Reseat connectors and check for damage.
- Replace if faulty: If cleaning and alignment do not resolve E8 and ice thickness remains incorrect, replace the Gram ice thickness sensor/probe.
