Possible Causes
Dirty water reservoir, Mold or biofilm in hoses or pump, New plastic components off-gassing, Use of unfiltered or stagnant water
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Unplug the unit before cleaning. Do not use harsh chemicals that are not food-safe.
Steps to improve taste and odor:
- 1. Discard old ice: Throw away all existing ice and drain the reservoir completely.
- 2. Deep clean reservoir and bin: Wash the water reservoir, ice basket, and interior surfaces with warm water and mild dish soap. Rinse thoroughly.
- 3. Descale and sanitize: Fill the reservoir with a mixture of 1 part white vinegar to 3 parts water. Run a cleaning cycle if available, or run a few ice-making cycles and discard the ice. Then flush with two full reservoirs of clean water.
- 4. Clean hoses and pump: If accessible, wipe internal hoses and pump inlet with a cloth soaked in the vinegar solution, then rinse.
- 5. Use filtered water: Going forward, use fresh, filtered water and change it daily if the unit is not used continuously.
Note: Persistent musty odors may indicate mold growth in inaccessible areas; in that case, consider professional cleaning or replacing heavily contaminated parts.
