Possible Causes

Failed cabinet temperature sensor, Poor condenser airflow causing high temperature, Dirty condenser coils, Faulty main control board temperature circuit

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety First: Disconnect power before cleaning or accessing internal components. Allow hot components to cool.

  • Improve airflow: Pull the ice maker away from the wall. Ensure there is adequate clearance around the sides and back per the installation manual.
  • Clean condenser coils: Remove the lower front or rear grille to access the condenser. Use a coil brush and vacuum to remove dust and lint. This is critical for undercounter Kenmore ice makers.
  • Check condenser fan: With the unit unplugged, spin the condenser fan blade by hand. It should move freely. If stiff or noisy, the fan motor may be failing.
  • Inspect temperature sensor: Locate the cabinet or ambient thermistor (often clipped near the evaporator or in the air path). Check for loose mounting or damaged wires. Reseat the connector at the control board.
  • Reset and test: Plug the unit back in and allow it to run. If E4 returns quickly, the thermistor or control board may be out of calibration and require replacement.
