Possible Causes
Failed compressor start relay, Open overload protector, Low line voltage, Locked compressor
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety First: Unplug the ice maker before accessing the compressor compartment. Capacitors can hold a charge—discharge safely if present.
- Access compressor components: Remove the rear lower panel to expose the compressor, start relay, and overload protector.
- Inspect for overheating: Check if the compressor shell is extremely hot. If so, allow it to cool before further testing.
- Test start relay and overload: Disconnect the relay/overload assembly from the compressor terminals. Use a multimeter to check for continuity through the overload and proper resistance across the relay. Replace the assembly if open or rattling.
- Check supply voltage: With the unit plugged in (exercise caution), verify that proper voltage is present at the compressor terminals when it should be running. Low voltage can trigger E9.
- Compressor evaluation: If the relay and overload are good but the compressor hums and trips, the compressor may be locked and require professional replacement.
