Possible Causes

Faulty ice full sensor or infrared level sensor, Stuck or misaligned ice basket position micro-switch, Broken actuator arm for ice full detection, Loose wiring between sensor and control PCB

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety: Unplug the ice maker before inspecting internal mechanisms.

Steps to resolve E3:

  • Empty the ice basket: Remove all ice from the storage basket and ensure nothing is blocking the ice shovel or swing arm.
  • Check the ice full arm or sensor: On many Russell Hobbs ice makers, a plastic arm or optical sensor detects when the basket is full. Make sure the arm moves freely and is not jammed by ice or debris. For optical sensors, gently clean the emitter and receiver windows with a soft cloth.
  • Inspect micro-switches: If your model uses a mechanical micro-switch for basket position, locate the small switch near the ice shovel or basket support. Press it by hand to feel a distinct click. If it sticks or does not click, it may be faulty.
  • Check wiring: Follow the wires from the ice full sensor or micro-switch back to the control PCB. Look for loose plugs, broken insulation, or corrosion. Reseat connectors firmly.
  • Test the switch (advanced): With the unit unplugged, disconnect the micro-switch and test continuity with a multimeter while pressing and releasing the actuator. Replace if readings do not change as expected.
  • Replace components: Replace a defective ice full sensor assembly or basket position micro-switch. If sensors and switches test good but E3 persists, the main control PCB may be at fault.

Tip: After any repair, power the unit back on and allow it to run through a full cycle to confirm the error is cleared.
