E5 error, unit powers on but compressor does not run, no ice production
Safety Warning
This repair may involve working with high voltage components or water connections. Always unplug the appliance before removing any panels.
If you are not confident in your ability to perform this repair safely, we strongly recommend contacting a professional technician.
Possible Causes
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety warning: Unplug the ice maker before removing panels. The compressor circuit carries mains voltage. If you are not experienced with electrical testing, contact a professional.
Steps to investigate E5:
- Ventilation check: Ensure the rear and sides of the ice maker have at least 10–15 cm clearance for airflow. Overheating can trip the compressor protection and trigger E5.
- Power reset: Unplug the unit for 20–30 minutes to allow the compressor overload protector to cool and reset. Plug back in and listen for the compressor attempting to start.
- Access compressor compartment: Remove the rear lower panel to expose the compressor, start relay/PTC, and overload protector.
- Inspect start components: Remove the plastic cover on the compressor terminals. Check the PTC start relay and overload protector for signs of burning, cracking, or melting. Replace if damaged.
- Test compressor (advanced): With the unit unplugged, disconnect the start components and measure resistance between compressor terminals (C-R, C-S, R-S). Infinite resistance or a short to ground indicates a failed compressor.
- Replace parts: If the PTC relay or overload is faulty, replace the compressor start relay/overload assembly. If the compressor itself is defective, the repair is complex and usually not economical for countertop ice makers.
Important: Refrigerant system repairs must be performed by a certified refrigeration technician.
