Possible Causes
Defective compressor start relay or PTC, Overheated compressor due to poor ventilation, Failing compressor windings, Faulty main control board relay
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety: Disconnect power before accessing the compressor compartment. Capacitors and mains wiring can be hazardous.
Procedure:
- Allow cooling: If the unit has been running continuously, unplug it and let it cool for at least 30–45 minutes. An overheated compressor can trigger E5.
- Check ventilation and condenser: Confirm that vents are clear and the condenser coil is clean. Overheating can cause the compressor overload to trip.
- Inspect start relay/PTC: Remove the rear panel to access the compressor. The start relay/PTC is attached to the compressor terminals under a plastic cover. Check for burn marks, melted plastic, or rattling pieces inside the relay when shaken gently.
- Test and replace: If the relay/PTC appears damaged or smells burnt, replace the compressor start relay/PTC module with a compatible Sencor part.
- Compressor health: If a new relay does not resolve E5 and the compressor hums then clicks off, the compressor itself may be failing. This requires professional sealed system service or replacement of the unit.
