Possible Causes

Jammed ice shovel or tray mechanism, Failed ice shovel motor, Broken gear or linkage in drive assembly, Faulty position sensor or limit switch on shovel mechanism

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Unplug the appliance before reaching into the ice-making compartment or removing covers.

  • Check for obstructions: Open the lid and inspect the ice shovel or rotating tray. Remove any large ice chunks, misformed cubes, or foreign objects that may block movement.
  • Defrost the evaporator area: If ice has built up around the shovel or tray, allow the unit to sit unplugged with the lid open for 30–60 minutes to melt excess ice. Do not use sharp tools on the evaporator plate.
  • Manually move the mechanism: Gently move the shovel or tray by hand. It should move smoothly with slight resistance from the motor/gearbox. If it is locked solid, inspect for broken plastic parts or bent metal arms.
  • Access the drive motor: Remove the top or side housing to reach the shovel motor and gear assembly. Check the motor connector and wiring harness for loose plugs or damaged wires.
  • Test the motor: With a multimeter, check the motor coil resistance. An open circuit indicates a failed motor. If safe and you are experienced, you can briefly power the motor with the correct voltage (per label) to confirm operation.
  • Replace faulty parts: Replace the ice shovel motor or complete drive assembly if gears are stripped. If the motor runs but the unit still shows E3, inspect or replace the position sensor or limit switch used by the control PCB to detect home position.
