Possible Causes
Failed compressor start relay, Defective compressor start capacitor, Faulty main PCB compressor relay, Open thermal overload on compressor
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Unplug the ice maker before accessing the compressor compartment.
Diagnostic steps:
- Listen for compressor attempt: When turning the unit on, listen at the back. A brief click followed by silence can indicate a bad start relay or capacitor.
- Access compressor area: Remove the lower rear panel to expose the compressor, start relay, and capacitor.
- Check start relay: Disconnect the relay from the compressor terminals. Shake it gently; if it rattles or smells burnt, it is likely defective. Test for continuity according to the relay's pin layout. Replace with a SMEG-compatible compressor start relay if faulty.
- Test start capacitor: Discharge the capacitor safely by shorting its terminals with an insulated resistor. Use a capacitance meter to verify its value matches the rating on the label. Replace if out of tolerance or visibly swollen.
- Inspect compressor overload: The thermal overload protector clipped to the compressor shell can open if overheated. Test for continuity; if open when the compressor is cool, replace it.
- Control board output: If relay, capacitor, and overload test good, the main PCB may not be sending power to the compressor. This typically requires board replacement and should be done by a professional.
