Ice maker runs but does not produce any ice; evaporator plate does not frost.
Safety Warning
This repair may involve working with high voltage components or water connections. Always unplug the appliance before removing any panels.
If you are not confident in your ability to perform this repair safely, we strongly recommend contacting a professional technician.
Possible Causes
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Disconnect power before removing covers. Do not attempt to open the sealed refrigeration system unless you are a certified technician.
Basic checks:
- Check ambient conditions: Ensure the SMEG ice maker is installed in a room within the specified temperature range (typically 10–38°C). Extreme ambient temperatures can prevent ice formation.
- Inspect condenser coil: Remove the lower front or rear grille and vacuum dust from the condenser coil. A clogged condenser can reduce cooling performance.
- Verify fan operation: Confirm that the condenser fan and internal circulation fan are running when the unit is in ice-making mode. Replace the fan motor if it does not run when powered.
- Check evaporator plate temperature: After 10–15 minutes of operation, carefully touch near (not directly on) the evaporator plate. It should be very cold and starting to frost. If it remains warm, suspect a sealed system issue or a faulty thermistor.
- Test evaporator thermistor: Access the thermistor clipped to or near the evaporator plate. Disconnect it and measure resistance at room temperature; compare to SMEG specifications. Replace the thermistor if readings are out of range or unstable.
Sealed system note: If the compressor runs continuously, fans operate, but the evaporator never frosts, the unit likely has a refrigerant or compressor problem. This requires specialized tools and should be handled by an authorized SMEG refrigeration technician.
