SMEG
Ice Level Sensor or Bin Switch Fault
Ice maker indicates a bin full or ice level sensor error even when the bin is empty.

Possible Causes
Dirty optical ice level sensor, Misaligned mechanical bin switch, Failed infrared emitter/receiver, Loose wiring to level sensor
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Unplug the ice maker before working near sensors or wiring.
Cleaning and checks:
- Identify sensor type: Many SMEG ice makers use an optical (infrared) sensor pair above the bin; others use a mechanical flap or microswitch.
- Clean optical sensors: If optical, gently clean the sensor windows with a soft cloth and mild, non-abrasive cleaner. Remove any mineral deposits or ice residue that could block the beam.
- Check alignment: Ensure the emitter and receiver are directly facing each other and not bent out of position.
- Inspect mechanical switch: If a mechanical arm or flap is used, verify it moves freely and actuates the microswitch. Replace the switch if it does not click or fails continuity testing.
- Check wiring harness: Confirm the sensor harness is fully seated on the main PCB and at the sensor. Look for pinched or broken wires.
- Reset unit: After cleaning and adjustments, reconnect power and reset the ice maker. The false bin-full indication should clear if the sensor is functioning.
