Possible Causes
Seized fan motor bearings, Obstructed fan blades by ice or debris, Failed fan motor winding, Faulty fan control output on PCB
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Disconnect the appliance from mains power before accessing fan assemblies.
Resolution steps:
- Locate the fan: Depending on the SMEG model, there may be a condenser fan at the rear and an evaporator fan inside the cabinet.
- Check for obstructions: Remove any ice buildup, plastic packaging, or debris preventing the fan from spinning. Ensure blades are not rubbing against shrouds.
- Spin test: Gently spin the fan blades by hand. If stiff or noisy, the motor bearings may be failing and the motor should be replaced.
- Electrical test: With power disconnected, measure resistance across the fan motor terminals. An open circuit indicates a failed motor. Replace with a SMEG-compatible fan motor.
- Inspect wiring and connectors: Confirm that the fan connector is firmly seated on the PCB and that wires are not damaged.
- Control board check: If the fan motor tests good but never receives voltage when the unit is running, the PCB fan driver may be defective, requiring board replacement.
