Possible Causes
Leaking water inlet valve, Cracked internal hose or sump, Blocked drain causing overflow, Stuck safety float switch
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Unplug the unit and close the water supply immediately to prevent further leakage. Mop up any standing water to avoid slipping hazards.
Steps:
- Access base pan: Remove the front kick plate or rear panel to inspect the base pan for water. Many SMEG units have a float switch here that triggers E16.
- Dry the area: Use towels or a sponge to remove all water from the base pan. Gently move the float to ensure it is free and not stuck in the up position.
- Identify leak source: With the water supply turned back on (but power still off), observe hoses, the inlet valve, sump, and pump housings for drips. Tighten hose clamps or replace cracked hoses as needed.
- Check drain path: Ensure the internal drain and external hose are not blocked, causing water to back up and overflow.
- Test float switch: Disconnect the float switch and test for proper open/closed operation with a multimeter as you move the float. Replace if faulty.
- Restore operation: Once leaks are repaired and the base is dry, reconnect power and confirm that the E16 error has cleared.
