Possible Causes

Failed compressor start relay, defective PTC starter, locked rotor compressor, low supply voltage, faulty main control PCB relay

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety: Unplug the unit before accessing the compressor area.

  • Verify power supply: Plug the ice maker into a known-good outlet. Avoid extension cords or power strips that may drop voltage.
  • Access compressor terminals: Remove the rear panel and locate the compressor. Remove the plastic cover over the electrical terminals.
  • Inspect start relay/PTC: Remove the start relay/PTC module and check for rattling pieces, burn marks, or melted plastic. Replace if damaged.
  • Test compressor windings: With the unit unplugged, measure resistance between the three compressor pins (C, R, S). Compare to spec; open or shorted windings indicate a bad compressor.
  • Replace start device: If the compressor windings are good, install a new Tower-compatible compressor start relay/PTC and overload protector.
  • Control board: If the compressor still does not start and E8 persists, the main control PCB relay or board may be defective and should be replaced by a technician.
