Possible Causes

Overheated compressor, Blocked condenser airflow, Low refrigerant charge, Faulty compressor start relay or overload protector

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Unplug the unit. Do not attempt sealed-system (refrigerant) repairs unless you are a certified technician.

Steps to address E5:

  • Improve ventilation: Ensure the Tristar ice maker has at least 4–6 inches (10–15 cm) clearance on all sides and is not placed in a confined cabinet or near a heat source.
  • Clean condenser: Remove the rear panel and gently clean dust from the condenser coil and fan using a soft brush or vacuum.
  • Check fan operation: Confirm the condenser fan runs whenever the compressor is on. If not, see fan-related repair steps (E4).
  • Inspect start components: With power disconnected, remove the compressor start relay and overload protector. Check for burn marks or rattling (a sign of a failed relay).
  • Replace start kit if faulty: Install a new Tristar compressor start relay and overload protector if the originals are damaged or test out of spec.
  • Test run: Reassemble, plug in, and monitor operation. If E5 persists and the compressor is extremely hot or not starting, the compressor or sealed system may be failing and requires a professional technician.
