Possible Causes

Blocked condenser airflow, Failed condenser fan motor, Dirty condenser coil, Overheated or failing compressor, Faulty overload protector

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety: Unplug the unit before cleaning or accessing internal components. Do not bypass safety devices.

Steps to address E5:

  • Check ventilation: Ensure the ice maker has adequate clearance on all sides per the manual. Move it away from walls or cabinets that block airflow.
  • Clean condenser: Remove the rear or side panel to access the condenser coil. Use a soft brush and vacuum to remove dust and lint. Do not bend the fins.
  • Verify condenser fan operation: With the panel off, briefly plug in the unit and start a cycle. Confirm the condenser fan spins smoothly. If it does not start or is noisy, unplug the unit and replace the condenser fan motor.
  • Inspect overload protector: The compressor overload/thermal protector is usually clipped to the compressor terminals. Check for signs of overheating or burning. If it repeatedly trips, test compressor current draw with a clamp meter (technician recommended).
  • Ambient temperature: Ensure the unit is not installed in a very hot environment (e.g., next to an oven or in direct sunlight), which can cause high head pressure and E5.
  • Replace faulty parts: If the fan is not running or the overload is defective, replace the condenser fan motor or overload protector with Whynter-approved parts.
  • Technician note: If the compressor is drawing locked-rotor current or is extremely hot to the touch and E5 persists after cleaning and fan replacement, the compressor or sealed system may be failing and requires professional service.
