Possible Causes

Low refrigerant charge due to leak, Blocked capillary tube, Faulty evaporator sensor reading, Weak compressor

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety: Unplug the unit before removing panels. Sealed system work (refrigerant) must be done by an EPA-certified technician.

Steps to evaluate E6:

  • Basic reset: Unplug for 10 minutes and restart. If E6 returns, continue.
  • Check evaporator frost pattern: Remove the cover to view the evaporator during a cycle. After 5–10 minutes of compressor run time, a healthy system should show even frost across most of the evaporator surface.
  • Uneven or no frost: If only a small section frosts or there is no frost at all while the compressor is running, this suggests low refrigerant, a restriction, or a weak compressor.
  • Listen for compressor: Confirm the compressor is running (low humming sound and slight vibration). If it is hot and cycling off quickly, the overload may be tripping.
  • Check evaporator sensor: If your model uses an evaporator sensor for E6 logic, verify its connection and resistance as described for E2. A bad sensor can falsely trigger E6.
  • Clean condenser and ensure airflow: Poor heat rejection can mimic low refrigerant symptoms. Clean the condenser coil and verify the condenser fan is running.
  • Call a technician: If airflow and sensors are good but E6 persists with poor frost pattern, the sealed system likely has a leak or restriction. This requires professional diagnosis, leak repair, evacuation, and recharging.
