Possible Causes
Misadjusted ice thickness probe, Scale buildup on thickness sensor, Broken or disconnected probe wiring, Failed ice thickness sensor
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety: Unplug the ice maker before working near the evaporator or sensor probes.
Steps to correct E7:
- Locate the thickness sensor: On many Whynter models, a metal or plastic probe sits near the evaporator grid or plate and detects when ice reaches a certain thickness.
- Clean the probe: Mineral scale can insulate the probe and cause errors. Use a soft brush and a 1:1 vinegar-water solution to remove buildup. Rinse with clean water and dry.
- Check adjustment: Some probes are adjustable. Refer to your manual for the correct gap between the probe and the evaporator. Adjust gently if needed so it is not touching the evaporator but is close enough to sense ice.
- Inspect wiring: Follow the probe wires back to the control board. Ensure the connector is fully seated and the wires are not broken or pinched.
- Test operation: Restore power and run a cycle. Observe whether the unit now completes a freeze and harvest cycle without E7.
- Replace sensor: If E7 persists and the probe is clean, correctly positioned, and wired, replace the ice thickness sensor/probe with the correct Whynter part.
