Possible Causes
Defective freezer NTC sensor, Sensor shorted to chassis, Damaged sensor harness, Failed control board input circuit
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety: Disconnect power before accessing internal components.
Steps to fix F1:
- Locate freezer sensor: On built-in Whynter ice makers, the freezer sensor is typically mounted on the evaporator wall or behind an interior panel.
- Inspect sensor and wiring: Remove the interior panel as needed. Check that the sensor is firmly attached and that its wires are not pinched or cut.
- Measure resistance: With the unit unplugged, disconnect the sensor and measure its resistance at freezer temperature. Compare to the service chart if available; if not, compare to a known-good ambient sensor. A reading of 0 Ω or OL indicates failure.
- Check for shorts: Ensure the sensor leads are not touching metal surfaces that could cause a short.
- Replace sensor: Install a new freezer temperature sensor if readings are out of range or intermittent.
- Control board replacement: If a new sensor does not clear F1, the control board may not be reading the sensor correctly and should be replaced.
