Possible Causes
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Unplug the microwave before removing any panels. High voltage components can retain a charge even when unplugged; do not touch the high-voltage capacitor or magnetron area.
- Power reset: Unplug the microwave for 5–10 minutes, then plug it back in and test. Sometimes E1 is a temporary control lockup.
- Check control lock: Verify that the CHILD LOCK feature is not enabled. On many Black+Decker models, hold the STOP/CANCEL button for 3–5 seconds to toggle the lock.
- Inspect keypad ribbon:
- Remove the outer cabinet (usually screws on the back and sides).
- Locate the flat ribbon cable from the keypad to the control board.
- Gently disconnect and reconnect the ribbon, ensuring it is fully seated and not damaged or corroded.
- Test keypad response: With the unit reassembled and plugged in, try multiple keys. If some or all keys are unresponsive and E1 persists, the membrane keypad or full control panel assembly is likely faulty.
- Replace keypad/control panel: If reseating the ribbon does not help, replace the keypad or complete control panel assembly specific to your Black+Decker model. This usually involves removing the control panel frame, disconnecting the ribbon, and swapping the part.
If you are not comfortable working around high-voltage appliances, contact a qualified technician.
