Possible Causes
Contaminated membrane keypad from spills, Shorted keypad circuit, Damaged keypad ribbon cable, Failed control panel assembly
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Unplug the microwave before removing the control panel.
- Clean keypad surface:
- Wipe the keypad with a slightly damp cloth and mild detergent.
- Dry thoroughly and avoid excessive moisture around the edges.
- Power reset: Unplug for 10 minutes, then plug back in and test. If SE appears immediately, a key is likely shorted.
- Inspect keypad ribbon:
- Remove the control panel assembly (usually a few screws and lifting up and out).
- Disconnect and reconnect the flat ribbon cable between the keypad and control board.
- Check for corrosion, cracks, or burn marks on the ribbon.
- Replace keypad/control panel: If SE persists, replace the membrane keypad or the entire control panel assembly with the correct Black+Decker part.
Do not attempt to operate the microwave with a shorted keypad, as it may start unexpectedly.
