Possible Causes

Residual pressure in pot, Starch or food residue around float valve, Bent float valve pin, Faulty steam release valve not venting fully

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Never force the lid open. Forcing the lid under pressure can cause serious injury.

  • Check steam release: Ensure the steam release valve is set to Vent. If steam is still escaping, wait until it stops and the float drops.
  • Natural release: For very full or starchy dishes, allow an extended natural release (20–30 minutes) before attempting to open.
  • Gently tap float: Once you are sure pressure is released (no steam, quiet), gently tap the float valve with a utensil to see if it drops. Do not pry it.
  • Clean after opening: When you can open the lid, remove and clean the float valve and surrounding area to prevent future sticking.

If the float valve frequently sticks up even after full depressurization, replace the float valve assembly.
