Possible Causes
Failed lid switch or magnetic sensor, Misaligned lid magnet, Broken or disconnected lid sensor wiring, Control board misinterpreting lid status
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Unplug the grill before adjusting or replacing any switches or sensors.
- Identify lid sensor: Look along the front or side edge of the cook chamber for a small switch or magnetic sensor. On some models, a magnet is embedded in the lid and a sensor is in the body.
- Check alignment: Close the lid and verify that the magnet lines up with the sensor. Adjust the sensor mounting position if necessary so they align closely when the lid is closed.
- Inspect wiring: Follow the sensor wires to the control board. Ensure connectors are secure and wires are not damaged.
- Bypass test (advanced): For diagnostic purposes only and with caution, a technician may temporarily jumper the lid switch wires to simulate a closed lid. If the grill then operates normally, the switch is faulty and should be replaced. Do not operate the grill long‑term with safety switches bypassed.
- Replace sensor: Install a new Char‑Broil lid switch or magnetic sensor if the original is defective.
