Possible Causes

Failed igniter rod, Loose igniter wiring at control board, Blown igniter fuse on control board, Damaged igniter connector in fire pot area

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Unplug the grill from power and allow it to cool completely before opening any panels. Never work on the igniter with the grill plugged in.

  • Check for obvious damage: Remove the cooking grates and heat diffuser to expose the fire pot. Inspect the igniter tip in the fire pot for cracks, heavy corrosion, or missing ceramic insulation.
  • Verify igniter wiring: Access the wiring compartment (usually behind a side or rear panel). Locate the igniter wires from the fire pot to the control board. Ensure the connectors are fully seated and not burned or melted.
  • Test igniter operation: With the fire pot empty and grill reassembled enough for safe operation, plug in the grill. Start an ignition cycle with the lid open. After 2–3 minutes, carefully feel for heat near (not on) the igniter area. If there is no heat, the igniter is likely failed.
  • Replace the igniter: Unplug the grill again. Remove the mounting screw(s) holding the igniter in the fire pot. Gently pull the igniter and wiring out. Install a compatible Char‑Broil pellet grill igniter, routing the wires away from hot surfaces and moving parts. Reconnect to the control board.
  • Test the grill: Reassemble the fire pot components, plug in the grill, and run a startup cycle with a small amount of pellets. Confirm that pellets ignite within a few minutes and ERR1 does not reappear.
