Possible Causes
Grease fire in cook chamber, Temperature probe contamination causing false high reading, Control board overheat protection triggered, Blocked exhaust or chimney cap
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: If you suspect a grease fire, keep the lid closed, turn the grill off, and unplug it. Do not use water on a grease fire.
- Inspect for grease buildup: Once the grill is completely cool, remove grates and heat diffuser. Check the drip tray, grease channel, and fire pot area for heavy grease and carbon buildup. Clean thoroughly with a plastic scraper and mild degreaser.
- Check exhaust flow: Make sure the chimney cap is not fully closed or blocked with soot. Clean the chimney and interior baffle so smoke and heat can escape properly.
- Clean the temperature probe: Locate the internal temperature sensor on the side wall of the cook chamber. Wipe off heavy soot and grease with a damp cloth and mild detergent. Built-up residue can cause false high readings.
- Reset and test: Plug the grill back in. Start at a low temperature setting (e.g., 225°F) and monitor the temperature. If ERR2 does not reappear and temperatures are stable, resume normal use.
- If ERR2 persists: The temperature sensor or control board may be faulty. Inspect the sensor wiring for damage or loose connections. Replace the temperature probe first; if the issue remains, consider replacing the control board or contacting Char‑Broil support.
