Possible Causes
RTD sensor shorted to grill body, Melted RTD cable insulation, Moisture intrusion in RTD connector, Failed control board temperature input
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Unplug the grill before inspecting wiring.
- Visual inspection: Locate the RTD probe and follow its cable. Look for melted insulation where the cable passes near the firebox or exhaust. Ensure the bare wires are not touching the metal body.
- Check connector: Disconnect the RTD from the control board and inspect for corrosion or moisture. Dry the connector thoroughly and clean with electrical contact cleaner if needed.
- Measure resistance: With the RTD disconnected, measure resistance across the two RTD leads. A near-zero reading indicates a shorted sensor. Replace the RTD assembly if shorted.
- Isolate board fault: If a known-good RTD still produces ERR5, the temperature input circuit on the control board may be damaged. In that case, replacement of the main control board is required.
- Re-route cable: When installing a new RTD, route the cable away from sharp edges and hot surfaces, securing it with high-temperature cable ties.
