Possible Causes

Failed ignition rod, Loose igniter wiring at control board, Blown igniter fuse on main board, Shorted igniter drawing excessive current

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Turn the grill OFF, unplug it from mains, and allow it to cool completely before working inside the fire pot or control area.

  • Check for glow: Remove the cooking grates and heat diffuser to expose the fire pot. Start the grill and watch through the fire pot (without touching anything). Within 3–5 minutes, the igniter tip should glow red. If it never glows and Er01 appears, the igniter is likely faulty.
  • Inspect wiring: Unplug the grill. Access the control box and follow the igniter wires from the fire pot to the main control board. Ensure the plug is fully seated and wires are not pinched, burned, or cut.
  • Test igniter resistance: Disconnect the igniter from the board and measure resistance with a multimeter. A typical hot rod is usually between 40–80 Ω. Infinite (open) or 0 Ω (short) indicates a bad igniter.
  • Check board fuse: Some Outdoorchef control boards have an inline or on-board fuse for the igniter circuit. Inspect and replace only with the same rating if blown. If it blows again immediately, the igniter is shorted.
  • Replace igniter: Remove the retaining screw or bracket at the fire pot, slide out the old igniter, route the new igniter wires the same way, and secure them away from hot surfaces. Reconnect to the control board, reassemble the interior parts, and test ignition.

If Er01 persists after replacing the igniter and verifying wiring, the main control board may be defective and should be evaluated or replaced by a qualified technician.
