Possible Causes
Weak or damaged thermocouple, loose thermocouple connection at gas valve, misaligned flame not heating thermocouple tip, faulty flame failure valve
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Turn off gas at the main shutoff valve before working on gas components.
- Observe flame: When lighting the burner, ensure the flame fully envelops the thermocouple tip. If not, clean the burner ports and reposition the burner cap.
- Hold knob longer: On some models, you must hold the knob depressed for several seconds to allow the thermocouple to heat and keep the valve open.
- Inspect thermocouple: Check that the thermocouple is firmly seated in its bracket and not bent away from the flame. Tighten the nut where it connects to the gas valve (do not overtighten).
- Replace thermocouple: If the flame is correct but the burner still goes out when you release the knob, replace the thermocouple for that burner.
- Valve replacement: If a new thermocouple does not solve the issue, the flame failure gas valve may be defective and should be replaced by a qualified gas technician.
