Possible Causes
Faulty thermocouple, Misaligned thermocouple tip, Loose thermocouple connection at valve, Weak magnet in safety valve
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Turn the burner OFF and allow it to cool before touching the thermocouple.
User steps:
- Light the burner and hold the knob pressed in for 5–10 seconds to allow the thermocouple to heat fully before releasing.
- Ensure the flame directly contacts the thermocouple tip; adjust the burner cap if necessary.
Technician steps:
- Inspect the thermocouple for damage or heavy oxidation; replace if necessary.
- Check the thermocouple connection at the gas valve and tighten.
- Measure thermocouple output in millivolts when heated; if below spec, replace the thermocouple.
- If a new thermocouple does not hold the valve, replace the gas safety valve for that burner.
