Possible Causes
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety: Disable automatic start and isolate AC output. Avoid repeated cranking to prevent starter damage.
- Check fuel and gas supply: For natural gas/LP units, verify gas shutoff valves are open and gas pressure is within CAT specifications. For diesel, confirm fuel level and open valves.
- Inspect air intake: Remove and inspect the air filter element. If heavily clogged, replace with a CAT-approved air filter. Ensure intake ducting is not blocked by debris or nests.
- Check ignition (gas units): Inspect spark plug wires and ignition coil connections. Remove a spark plug and inspect for fouling; clean or replace as needed. Ensure the ignition module connector is secure.
- Verify engine speed sensor: Locate the magnetic pickup or speed sensor near the flywheel. Check for loose mounting, damaged wiring, or metal debris on the sensor tip. Clean and reseat if necessary.
- Clear code and retry: Clear E-05, then attempt a manual start while listening for abnormal sounds. Stop if unusual knocking or grinding is heard.
If the engine still will not start after basic checks, further diagnostics on fuel injection or ignition timing should be performed by a CAT technician.
