Possible Causes
Low coolant level, Failed radiator fan, Blocked radiator fins, Stuck thermostat
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety: Allow the engine to cool completely before opening the cooling system. Hot coolant can cause severe burns.
- Check coolant level: Inspect the coolant level in the expansion tank or radiator (if accessible). Top up with the correct CAT-approved coolant mix if low. Investigate for leaks at hoses, clamps, and radiator.
- Inspect radiator and fan: Check that the electric or belt-driven fan operates when the engine warms up. Look for broken fan blades or loose belts. Clean radiator fins with low-pressure air or water to remove dirt and debris.
- Check thermostat operation: If the engine overheats quickly from cold, the thermostat may be stuck closed. Replace the thermostat with a CAT-specified part following the engine service procedure.
- Verify coolant pump and hoses: Look for collapsed hoses or signs of coolant not circulating (one hose hot, one cold). A failed water pump may leak from the weep hole or make noise.
- Clear code and test: After corrections, clear E-06 and run the generator under light load while monitoring temperature on the controller.
Persistent overheating after these steps indicates a deeper cooling system or engine issue that should be handled by a CAT service provider.
