Possible Causes
Restricted exhaust system, Overloading generator, Incorrect fuel/air mixture, Turbocharger lubrication issue
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety: Allow the exhaust system to cool fully. Disable automatic start and isolate AC output.
- Inspect exhaust outlet: Check for obstructions such as nests, debris, or crushed exhaust piping. Clear any blockage and ensure proper termination per CAT installation guidelines.
- Check load level: Review recent load history on the controller if available. Ensure the generator is not being run above its rated kW for extended periods.
- Air intake and filter: Inspect and replace a clogged air filter. Restricted air can cause high exhaust temperatures.
- Turbocharger inspection: Visually inspect the turbocharger (if equipped) for oil leaks, loose clamps, or damaged hoses. Do not disassemble; this should be left to a technician.
- Clear code and test: After addressing airflow and load, clear E-09 and run the generator under moderate load while monitoring exhaust temperature on the controller.
If high exhaust temperature recurs, internal engine or turbocharger issues may be present and require professional service.
