Possible Causes

Open remote start wiring from ATS, Incorrect dry contact wiring, Faulty ATS control board, Controller input failure

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety: Disable automatic start and lock out the transfer switch before working on control wiring.

  • Check controller mode: Ensure the CAT controller is in AUTO mode. In OFF or MANUAL, it will not respond to remote start.
  • Inspect remote start terminals: Locate the remote start input terminals on the generator controller. Verify that the wires from the ATS are secure and not corroded.
  • Test remote start contact: At the generator, temporarily jumper the remote start terminals (per CAT instructions) to simulate a start signal. If the generator starts, the issue is in the ATS or wiring.
  • Check ATS control board: Inspect the ATS for blown fuses, tripped control power breakers, or alarm LEDs. Reset as needed and verify the ATS sends a start signal when utility fails (simulate only if safe and per procedure).
  • Remove jumper and restore wiring: After testing, remove any temporary jumpers and reconnect the ATS wiring correctly.

If E-15 persists with known-good wiring and ATS operation, the controller input may be defective and require replacement by a CAT technician.
