Chronic Battery Discharge / Charging System Issue
Generator battery repeatedly goes dead between exercise cycles
Advertisements
Possible Causes
Failed battery charger, Parasitic draw from accessories, Sulfated or aged battery, Loose battery connections
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety: Disable automatic start. Wear eye protection when working with batteries.
- Test charger output: Measure voltage at the battery with AC power present. It should be around 13.2–13.6 V. If not, replace the CAT battery charger.
- Check for parasitic loads: With AC power off and charger disconnected, measure current draw from the battery. Excessive draw indicates a parasitic load that must be identified.
- Inspect connections: Clean and tighten battery terminals and ground straps.
- Evaluate battery health: Load-test the battery. Replace if it fails or is beyond its service life.
If the battery still discharges quickly after these steps, a CAT technician should check the controller and wiring for hidden loads.
