Generator runs but house lights flicker and some equipment resets intermittently
Safety Warning
This repair may involve working with high voltage components or water connections. Always unplug the appliance before removing any panels.
If you are not confident in your ability to perform this repair safely, we strongly recommend contacting a professional technician.
Possible Causes
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety: Isolate the generator and lock out power before opening any electrical enclosures.
- Check controller readings: Monitor voltage and frequency on the CAT controller while loads are applied. Look for large swings.
- Inspect output lugs: With power off, tighten all generator output lugs and neutral connections in the terminal box and ATS.
- Balance loads: Distribute large single-phase loads more evenly across phases if possible. Avoid starting multiple large motors simultaneously.
- Inspect AVR connections: Check the AVR module for secure connectors and signs of overheating.
If voltage remains unstable after tightening connections and balancing loads, the AVR or generator windings may be failing and should be tested by a CAT technician.
