Possible Causes
Loose oil filter, Loose or damaged oil drain plug, Valve cover gasket leak, Front or rear crankshaft seal leak
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety: Allow the engine to cool. Disable automatic start and keep the area clean to avoid slips.
- Locate leak source: Clean the engine exterior with degreaser and run briefly to see where fresh oil appears.
- Check oil filter and drain plug: Tighten the oil filter by hand (usually 3/4 turn after gasket contact) and snug the drain plug to spec. Do not overtighten.
- Inspect gaskets: Look around the valve cover and oil pan for seepage. Replace gaskets if leaking.
- Monitor oil level: Keep oil at the correct level and monitor for rapid loss, which indicates a more serious leak.
Leaks from crankshaft seals or internal engine joints typically require engine disassembly and should be handled by a CAT technician.
