Possible Causes
Failed drive motor, Faulty inverter board (if separate), Loose or damaged motor harness
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Unplug the unit and avoid rotating the drum aggressively by hand. The motor and inverter carry high voltage.
Steps to troubleshoot:
- Check for drum obstruction: Open the door and ensure no items are jammed between the drum and tub. Rotate the drum by hand; it should move smoothly without grinding.
- Access motor area: Remove the rear panel to access the drive motor and belt (if belt-driven) or direct-drive coupling.
- Inspect wiring: Check the motor harness connector for secure fit and no signs of burning or corrosion. Reseat the connector.
- Check belt (if equipped): Ensure the drive belt is intact, properly tensioned, and not off the pulley. Replace if frayed or broken.
- Test motor windings (advanced): With power disconnected, measure resistance across motor windings per GE specifications. Open or shorted windings indicate a bad motor.
- Inverter/control check: If the motor tests good, the inverter section of the main control board may be faulty and require replacement.
Due to the complexity and high voltage involved, replacement of the motor or inverter board is best handled by a qualified technician.
