Possible Causes

Stuck door lock mechanism, Failed door lock solenoid, Control board not sending unlock signal, Wiring harness issue between control and door lock

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Unplug the appliance. Do not force the door open with tools, as this can damage the door and lock.

  • Allow cool-down: If the unit just finished a high-temperature dry cycle, wait 5–10 minutes. Some models delay unlocking until the drum cools.
  • Try power reset: Unplug the unit for 2–3 minutes, then plug back in and attempt to cancel the cycle or start a new one. This can reset the control and unlock the door.
  • Manual release: Access the door lock area by removing the top or front panel (model-dependent). Many GE Profile locks have a manual release tab or pull cord. Gently pull to release the door.
  • Inspect lock and wiring: With power still disconnected, check the door lock assembly for signs of overheating or broken plastic. Verify the wiring harness is fully seated and not pinched or damaged.
  • Replace door lock assembly: If the lock is stuck mechanically or tests faulty, replace the door lock assembly. If a new lock does not resolve E42, the main control board may be defective and should be diagnosed by a technician.
