Possible Causes
Failed water temperature sensor (NTC), Loose or corroded NTC connector, Damaged wiring harness between NTC and control board, Control board input fault
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Unplug the appliance and shut off water supply before removing any hoses or accessing internal components.
- Locate temperature sensor: On most GE Profile combos, the NTC sensor is mounted in the outer tub or in the heater housing (if equipped with an internal heater).
- Inspect wiring: Check the sensor connector for corrosion, moisture, or looseness. Reseat the connector firmly and inspect the harness for damage.
- Test sensor resistance: Disconnect the sensor and measure its resistance at room temperature. Compare to the service manual's expected value. A reading far outside spec indicates a bad sensor.
- Replace NTC sensor: If faulty, remove the retaining clip or bracket and install a new water temperature sensor (NTC). Ensure it is fully seated in the tub or housing for accurate readings.
- Control board diagnosis: If the sensor and wiring are good but E71 persists, the main control board's sensor input may be defective and require replacement.
