Possible Causes
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Unplug the appliance before removing rear or bottom panels. The drum and motor can move suddenly.
Step-by-step checks:
- 1. Check drum movement: Rotate the drum by hand. If it turns freely and smoothly, the bearings and belt are likely intact. If it is very loose or noisy, there may be a mechanical issue.
- 2. Inspect the drive belt: Remove the rear panel. Verify that the belt is correctly seated on both the motor pulley and drum pulley. If the belt is off or broken, replace it with the correct Neff/Bosch belt.
- 3. Check motor brushes (for brushed motors): Remove the motor from its mounts. Inspect the carbon brushes; if they are shorter than about 1 cm or unevenly worn, replace them as a pair with compatible Neff/Bosch brushes.
- 4. Test tachometer coil: On the rear of the motor is a small tachometer coil. Measure its resistance (typically a few hundred ohms). An open circuit indicates a failed tachometer, requiring motor replacement.
- 5. Wiring and connectors: Inspect the motor plug and harness for burning or loose pins. Repair any damage.
- 6. Inverter/power module: If the motor and wiring are good but the drum never attempts to turn, the power module or inverter may be defective. This should be diagnosed and replaced by a professional.
When to call a technician: Motor and inverter work involves mains voltage and high currents; if unsure, contact a service technician.
