Possible Causes
Drive belt slipping or stretched, Motor unable to start under dryer load, Seized drum bearings or support wheels, Faulty motor capacitor (on capacitor-start motors)
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Unplug the appliance before accessing moving parts.
- Step 1 – Check drum rotation by hand: Open the door and rotate the drum. It should turn smoothly. Any stiffness or grinding suggests bearing or support issues.
- Step 2 – Inspect belt: Remove the rear panel and check the belt tension and condition. Replace if loose, cracked, or glazed.
- Step 3 – Motor start assistance (diagnostic only): With panels removed (and extreme caution), some technicians briefly assist the drum by hand at start to see if the motor is weak. Home users should avoid this and instead test the motor and capacitor with a multimeter.
- Step 4 – Check motor capacitor (if fitted): Locate the start capacitor near the motor. Discharge it safely, then test capacitance with a meter. Replace if out of tolerance.
- Step 5 – Bearings/supports: If the drum is hard to turn, the rear bearing or front support pads may be worn. Replacing these parts is complex and often best left to a technician.
