Possible Causes

Frequent low-temperature washes, Detergent and fabric softener residue in tub and hoses, Standing water in sump and pump, Blocked drain or vent causing backflow odors

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Use appropriate cleaning agents and follow label instructions. Do not mix bleach with other chemicals.

  • Run a maintenance wash: With the drum empty, run a 90°C cotton cycle using a washing machine cleaner or a cup of white vinegar (if approved by SMEG) to dissolve residues.
  • Clean door seal: Wipe the door gasket folds with a cloth and mild detergent, removing black slime or mold.
  • Clean detergent drawer: Remove the drawer and scrub away buildup. Clean the housing as well.
  • Clean pump filter: Remove and clean the pump filter to eliminate trapped debris that can smell.
  • Improve ventilation: Leave the door and detergent drawer slightly open between washes to allow drying.

If odors persist and resemble sewage, check the household drain trap and standpipe for blockages or lack of a proper water seal.
