Possible Causes
Burned-out lower element, Loose connection at lower thermostat, Sediment covering lower element, Failed lower thermostat relay
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety: Turn off power at the breaker and confirm no voltage is present.
- Access lower compartment: Remove the lower access panel and insulation to expose the thermostat and element.
- Check wiring: Tighten any loose screws on the thermostat and element. Look for signs of overheating or melted insulation.
- Test lower element: Disconnect wires from the element and measure resistance. Replace the element if open or shorted to ground.
- Address sediment: If the tank is heavily scaled, drain and flush the tank before installing a new lower element to prevent rapid failure.
- Restore operation: Refill the tank completely, purge air from hot taps, then restore power. Do not energize elements in an empty tank.
