Possible Causes
Thermostat set too low, Broken cold water dip tube, Sediment buildup reducing volume, Undersized tank for demand
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety: For gas models, turn the gas control to PILOT or OFF before removing covers. For electric, turn off the breaker.
- Check thermostat setting: Adjust the temperature dial to a higher setting within safe limits (49–54°C / 120–130°F). Wait several hours and recheck.
- Inspect for sediment: Attach a hose to the drain valve and flush several buckets of water until it runs clear. Heavy sediment can reduce effective capacity.
- Dip tube check: If hot water duration is very short, the cold inlet dip tube may be broken, allowing cold water to mix at the top. This requires removing the cold inlet nipple and inspecting/replacing the dip tube.
- Evaluate sizing: Compare household usage (showers, appliances) to the tank's first-hour rating. If demand exceeds capacity, consider upgrading to a larger GSW model.
