Possible Causes
Worn drain valve washer, Debris caught in valve seat, Cracked plastic drain valve body, Loose valve threads
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety: Turn off power or set gas control to OFF. Close the cold water supply valve to the heater.
- Try flushing debris: Attach a garden hose to the drain valve and briefly open it fully to flush out debris. Close firmly and check for leaks.
- Add a cap: As a temporary measure, install a threaded hose cap with a rubber washer on the drain outlet.
- Replace drain valve: Turn off water supply and relieve pressure by opening a hot tap. Drain water level below the valve. Unscrew the old valve and install a new brass drain valve with Teflon tape, tightening securely.
- Refill and test: Open the cold supply, purge air from hot taps, and check for leaks before restoring power or gas.
