GSW water heater makes popping, rumbling, or banging noises during heating

Safety: Turn off power or set gas control to PILOT/OFF. Allow water to cool before draining.

• Flush the tank: Connect a hose to the drain valve and drain several buckets of water while briefly opening the cold supply to stir sediment. Continue until water runs clearer.
• Deep cleaning (electric): Remove lower element and use a wet/dry vacuum with a small hose to remove heavy sediment from the bottom.
• Adjust temperature: Lower the thermostat setting to reduce boiling and scale formation.
• Water treatment: In hard-water areas, consider installing a water softener or schedule regular flushing (every 6–12 months) to prevent recurrence.
