Possible Causes
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety: Turn off power to the heater and close the gas shutoff valve before servicing. Venting components may have sharp edges.
- 1. Inspect vent and intake: From the outside termination, check for bird nests, leaves, snow, or debris blocking the PVC vent or intake. Clear any obstruction and ensure screens are clean.
- 2. Check condensate drain: If your John Wood power vent model has a condensate trap, remove and flush it with clean water. Ensure the drain line is not kinked or blocked.
- 3. Test the pressure switch: Locate the air pressure switch on the blower housing. Inspect the rubber tubing for cracks, water, or blockage; clear or replace as needed. With power off, disconnect the wires and check continuity across the switch while gently applying suction to the tubing port. Replace the switch if it does not close.
- 4. Verify blower operation: Restore power briefly and call for heat while observing the blower. If the blower hums but does not spin, or does not start at all, the blower motor may be seized or failed and should be replaced.
- 5. Reset and test: After corrections, power cycle the heater and clear the code per the user manual (often by turning the control to OFF then ON). Confirm normal ignition.
Note: Venting on power vent models is part of the safety system. If venting is improperly installed or damaged, have it inspected by a qualified technician.
