Possible Causes
Loose or corroded nipples, Failed dielectric unions, Cracked solder joints or fittings, Galvanic corrosion at dissimilar metal joints
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety: Turn off cold water supply and relieve pressure by opening a hot faucet before disassembling any piping.
- 1. Tighten connections: Use a wrench to gently tighten the hot and cold nipples or unions. Do not overtighten and damage the tank fittings.
- 2. Inspect for corrosion: If fittings are heavily corroded, remove and replace them with new nipples and dielectric unions compatible with John Wood tanks.
- 3. Reseal threads: When reinstalling, use approved pipe thread sealant or Teflon tape on male threads.
- 4. Check for tank leaks: If water appears to seep from under the insulation at the top, the tank itself may be leaking, requiring full heater replacement.
